Although saunas have been popular for centuries, they are not often thought of for treatments in traditional medicine. Traditionally, saunas have been unbearably hot, steamy rooms in which breathing can be difficult. But the saunas of today have technologically evolved from the harsh, 200°+ rooms they originated from to a soothing, healthy heat. Sunlighten infrared technology brings forth a therapeutic treatment that is not only relaxing but also clinically shown beneficial for your health. What is Infrared?
Infrared wavelengths are the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum consisting of near (NIR), mid (MIR) and far (FIR) rays. These rays have the ability to penetrate human tissue. This characteristic makes infrared beneficial because it heats the body directly at the core rather than simply warming the air resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where the majority of toxins reside.
Infrared heat is completely safe and healthy for all living things. You can be exposed to infrared light for hours without the risk of burning. Infrared is a naturally occurring output of the sun, but does not contain the harmful UV rays associated with unprotected sunlight. In fact, infrared’s gentle heat is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants.

The infrared spectrum consists of near (NIR), mid (MIR), and far (FIR) waves, each with distinct characteristics and frequency ranges. It’s impossible to deliver these three peak wavelengths at one time from a single source. That’s why Sunlighten developed a unique technology that combines three heating elements in one sauna heater. Solocarbon 3-in-1 heaters combine three distinct components within a single heating panel to provide near, mid, and far infrared at their peak wavelengths.
Near Infrared (photobiomodulation therapy) – the shortest infrared wavelength and penetrates the skin’s surface more effectively than the other two. Scientific research shows that when delivered at the vital wavelength of 880nm without extreme heat or light, NIR promotes skin renewal, cell health, wound healing, and tissue growth. NIR heaters consisting of high-wattage halogen bulbs at extremely high temperatures are not comfortable or beneficial. In order to make NIR heat safe for saunas, we used NASA research to develop a patented LED array that provides NIR at a singular wavelength with minimal variability and virtually undetectable heat and light. LEDs are effective because they can trigger a natural photo-biochemical reaction (similar to how plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue). Research from Dr. Harry Whelan, it takes a specific joule of NIR energy to deliver the wavelength needed to penetrate human tissue.
Mid infrared (MIR) – a longer wavelength that can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue where inflammation occurs. MIR helps expand blood vessels and increases circulation, so more oxygen can reach injured areas of the body. This reduces pain and speeds the healing process. View 3-in-1 study on pain relief. To produce MIR, sauna heaters must be able to maintain a surface temperature of 2500C. Though many sauna companies claim to provide full spectrum, the polypropylene material used in their heaters actually melts at the high temperature required for MIR. We worked with engineers and scientists to overcome this obstacle by using a higher quality product – DuPont’s Kapton® polyimide film—a high tech material made to tolerate the high heat required to produce MIR. Plus, since our full spectrum heaters are made up of three distinct heating elements, the MIR layer can be heated independently to a higher temperature than the FIR layer.
Far infrared (FIR) – the longest wavelength, reaches deepest into the body, where toxins are stored. What do I wear?
To enable infrared to penetrate tissues as deep as possible, we recommend wearing as little as possible. A cotton towel, gym shorts or swimsuit are perfect options.
How should I prepare myself before sauna session?
You should wait 60 minutes after eating a meal to allow food to digest. Upon arrival, we recommend you to drink at least 8 oz. of water for proper hydration and to prepare your body for an increase in core temperature.
What should I do for post sauna session?
You should drink at least 24 oz. of water or electrolyte to rehydrate. Dry off and allow the body to cool down naturally.
How often should I use the sauna?
One session will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. But similar to exercise, the more you do it, the better the results. Recommended use is 3-4 times per week for 30-40 minutes.
When will I start sweating?
Sweat levels differentiate between each individual. Don’t be surprised if you don’t sweat during the first few sessions. Sweating will increase with regular use. Even if your body is not drenched in sweat, your body is still detoxifying from harmful toxins. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water before your session. If you are dehydrated, you will not sweat as much.
Do I need a Doctor’s note?
No, if you have health concerns we recommend speaking with your doctor before your sauna session.
Are there any studies on infrared therapy?

Are children allowed to use the sauna?
The core body temperature of children rises much faster than adults. When taking a sauna session with a child, operate at a lower temperature and for no more than 15 minutes at a time.
A general rule of thumb is 1 minute inside your sauna per year of age for the child, but always accompanied by an adult. And remember to keep you and your children hydrated, even if you don’t see them sweating.
Is it ok to use the sauna while breastfeeding?
Please consult with your physician, as this answer is usually yes, but may be no depending upon you specific circumstances.
Can I sauna while pregnant?
Even though infrared is completely safe, it is not recommended to use while pregnant. While pregnant, the core body temperature is already elevated and you could overheat.
